What is the SteriShoe® UV Shoe Sanitizer?

Do you know what’s growing in your shoes? There’s a good chance you’ve never even thought about it. And we don’t blame you. It’s not the kind of thing most people consider. But if you’ve ever suffered from a foot infection or simply smelly shoes, it’s worth thinking about and addressing.

While there are many options available to you out there, nothing is more effective than the SteriShoe UV shoe sanitizer. Other supplemental treatments can address the foot complication you’re experiencing, but they do absolutely nothing to protect your feet from future infections.

We know this better than anyone because SteriShoe founder, Allan Ullman, was in the same exact situation. After three different treatments for his foot fungus, which kept returning, he finally came to the realization that his shoes were the problem! So, with the help of his son Adam, they created SteriShoe, the world’s first ultraviolet (UV) shoe sanitizer and the most effective solution for shoe odor.

But what is SteriShoe, you ask? Today, we’ll take a closer look at our revolutionary UV shoe sanitizer technology, how it works and a few foot/shoe complications it is clinically proven to help solve.

How SteriShoe® Works

SteriShoe is a UV shoe sanitizer that harnesses the power of ultraviolet light (UVC light, specifically) in order to eliminate the germs and bacteria living in your shoes. SteriShoe is clinically proven to kill up to 99.9% of the bacteria in your shoes, which can cause shoe odor and foot complications. In fact, our UV shoe sanitizer is so effective, it’s earned the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance!

Unlike our clothes, we tend to wear the same shoes day after day without cleaning them, especially the inside of shoes. The dark, damp environment inside creates the ideal breeding ground for bacteria. You might be surprised to learn that an average person’s foot can sweat up to a cup per day!

These fungal spores live in your shoes and can remain dormant even if you don’t wear the shoes for months. When the conditions are ideal once again, the spores activate and the bacteria thrive, causing foul shoe odor and even infections on your feet such as toe fungus or athlete’s foot.

So, how does SteriShoe work?

UVC Light

Our UV shoe sanitizer utilizes ultraviolet light, which destroys microorganisms living in your shoes. A germidcidal UVC light kills the bacteria, the same UVC light technology used for decades in hospitals and water treatment systems as a germicide. Unlike UVA and UVB — the ultraviolet wavelength that causes tans and sunburns — UVC light is completely filtered by our atmosphere, which is why we don’t often hear about it.

However, the scientific and medical communities are familiar with UVC light because of its well-established and proven ability to destroy microorganisms, which aren’t safe from its effects. When microorganisms are directly exposed to UVC light, they are killed. SteriShoe, unlike other UV shoe sanitizers claiming to work, the UVC light isn’t blocked by plastic, so the bacteria are directly exposed to the UVC light and die with up to 99.9% effectiveness.

Better Than Sprays or Powders

Instead of bathing your foot in chemicals, SteriShoe does the work while you aren’t wearing the shoes and with no harmful effect on your feet. Sprays and powders must be applied to the interior of your shoes and there is no good way to get them out. And the sweat from your feet simply reconstitutes the chemicals, exposing your feet to them, so there is no “drying” your shoes out. A few other considerations:

  • There is no data for any chemical being used to treat a shoe.
  • Chemicals are toxic! The most popular household disinfectant says “do not use on clothing or in direct contact with skin.” Other sprays and powders state “not for application on the human body” and “use in a well-ventilated area.” Some of these products use formalin — the same chemical known to cause cancer and is used to preserve specimens.
  • How much of a chemical should you use and would you use it daily if you need to seal it in a bag for 48 hours?

Our UV shoe sanitizer adds absolutely nothing to the inside of your shoes, and the UVC light is in a controlled dose, so your shoes are properly sanitized after every treatment. Once SteriShoe is finished, you’re done and the shoes are clean!

Completely Safe Technology

UVC light is an extremely effective germicide and is lethal to microorganisms under direct exposure. SteriShoe prevents people from coming into direct contact with UVC light with two important safety features: the compression sensor and the ambient light sensor.

Compression Sensor

The compression sensors require that the SteriShoe is in the shoe and slightly compressed in order to turn on. If the SteriShoe is sanitizing your shoes and it’s removed, the compression sensor realizes this and shuts the UVC light off.

Ambient Light Sensor

The ambient light sensor works by pre-scanning the shoe before allowing the SteriShoe to turn on. If the sensor detects ambient light, it won’t turn on. It only turns on if there is a dark environment (in addition to the slight compression). There is also a presence detector on the SteriShoe Essential that turns the UVC light off if you get too close to the device while it is treating a shoe.

How to Use SteriShoe®

When you take off your shoes, you can insert the SteriShoe UV shoe sanitizer into your shoes as you would insert a normal shoe tree. A simple press of a button starts a treatment cycle. After 15 or 45 minutes (depending on the version), up to 99.9% of the harmful microbes that can cause toenail fungus, athlete’s foot and offensive shoe odor are destroyed!

Our second-generation UV shoe sanitizer, the SteriShoe+ is a quicker way to treat your shoes. It treats your shoes from heel to toe with a 15-minute treatment time. It also features a built-in fan to dry your shoes quicker. It fits most types of footwear and comes with a one-year warranty.
